READ ME! Pancake Breakfast, this Saturday, 5-2-26.
Slight change in location, this time the event will be at the Greene County Fairgrounds, a short distance from the airport.
True story, couple of weeks ago, a local black bear figured out how to defeat the bungie holding our trash can lid down. He (likely a he since it was very large and had no cubs in tow) pulled the bags out and had a good old time tearing each bag apart looking for food. Now think about all of that effort to get a few crumbs and empty pistachios shells. You though, as Yogi would say, “being smarter than the average bear,” can come to the fairgrounds and and get some delicious pancakes without rummaging through the trash for food. But you and the bear do have something in common, he didn’t clean up the mess he made after dining, and neither do you, just munch away, no dish cleaning required.

It’s officially Spring, March 20th was the spring equinox, so renew that “spring in your step” as well! How you ask, well, here’s a suggestion. Come to the Greene County Airport on Saturday, April 12th, 2025 between 8am and 12 noon. SOAR and the Churches of Greene County are sponsoring another pancake breakfast, and, for the kids, a repeat of the Easter egg helicopter drop at the airport near Waynesburg PA. John Strope Celebration of Life
It is with sincere sadness that we at S.O.A.R. are announcing a Celebration of Life to be held at the Greene Count Airport. As many of you know, John passed away a few weeks ago after only 79 trips around the sun. John loved his many years as the anchor of airport in Waynesburg, only second to his love of his children and family. From the day he opened his business as owner operator of the Strope’s Aircraft Maintenance, he dedicated his life to all things aviation. He never failed to close the shop and volunteer his time, hangar space, and his years’ worth of contacts and knowledge to provide the much needed help for Aviation Day, or breakfast fly-ins, or whatever was needed that he could spare to make any event successful. He served his community, and as a younger man his country well, and lived an honorable life along with being a good friend to many of us.
And may we also say that he was the best flapjack cook this side of the Monongahela River, making likely thousands of them over the years at the many fly-in breakfasts. So please come and join us celebrate not his passing, but his life well lived. Click Here for information about the celebration on 8-18-24. And if you would like to read his obituary as well Click Here. A few pictures of John at the various events that he volunteered his help for can be seen by Clicking Here.
Gail S. Halvorsen, the Berlin Candy Bomber, dies at 101. As many of you know, we often celebrate and honor the Berlin Airlift at our Aviation Day events. Halvorsen, who flew many missions during the airlift, was an example to all of us of how having a kind heart and forgiveness in your soul can change, for the better, the world we live in. Thank you Colonel Halvorsen, for your sacrifice, courage, and for giving the hopeless hope. Read More About Him Here
